We need a Bestseller List in Nigeria, just like the New York
Times and the USA Today Bestseller lists.
We cannot keep ignoring our awesome writers here in Nigeria
and pander to the west. It is just one of the ways that we cede our own power
to other nations to decide for us which one, out of our vast pool of amazing
writers, is worthy enough to be mentioned.
We need to take the control of our narrative back and that
means, we need to determine for ourselves, which books we love without waiting
for validation from anybody.
Nigeria in and of itself, is changing its attitude towards
books. Some days ago when I spoke about publishing at an event, I realized that
more and more Nigerians are seeking to tow the path of writing. We need to give
ourselves a chance to succeed without waiting for anybody in any foreign
country.
All we need is a newspaper agreement, a monthly sales
submission from bookshops and a team. Very achievable right?
